It was very sad to learn about Gary Carter’s passing. While we were on different championship teams with the Mets that common bond always made for great conversation and fun times when we were together. Having lost 7 members from the 1969 Championship team I know what it feels like to lose someone close who was part of something very special. Gary was not only a great baseball player, he loved the game and had the respect of his teammates. New York City sports history will always be better because he was part of it.

Met fans take heart. As we come to the New Year just a small reminder. Even though you’ve gone through another difficult past season this might make your optimism stir a little. A number of years ago a Met team finished 9th not far from 10th and last in the National League (there was no Divisions at the time). With not a lot of reason to believe that much would change, the following season started with little hope that things would be different. But, as fate would have it, a new year brought a new season. And, what a difference a season makes. The 1969 Mets made history and the 1969 World Series victory is still talked about today. Miracles do happen. Met fans—Keep The Faith!

Good news for Mets hitters. They’re bringing in the fences at CitiField so now it will be a “more friendly” hitter’s ballpark. All of a sudden the warning track fly balls of the past couple of seasons might turn in to be home runs. That means more runs and probably longer games. While it will also help opposing batters, players like David Wright and Jason Bay are probably chomping at the bit now. Most of the big league stadiums now are small, hitter’s delights. There was a time not so long ago when many of the big league parks were spacious and pitching was a premium. But, the powers to be decided they wanted more home runs and more scoring. And, that’s what they got. Now small ballparks are the norm. I’m not saying CitiField will now be a small ballpark, but it certainly will be more appealing to hitters than it was. While I’ve always been concerned with misleading statistics in this regard it seems most baseball fans like it. All I can say is what a time to be a hitter in the Big Leagues standing in the batter’s box looking at those short fences.
