Art Shamsky was a major part of the "Miracle Mets" who won the 1969 World Series. After his Major League Baseball career, he remained in New York and became involved in a number of successful business enterprises. He also worked as a sports broadcaster on radio and television for eight years, and was a radio & television announcer for the New York Mets from 1979 to 1981.
Art put up some outstanding numbers during his career in the big leagues; notably, hitting 21 homers in only 234 at-bats for the Reds in 1966, and batting .300 for the Miracle Mets during the regular season in 1969 along with 14 home runs. His 7 hits in 13 at-bats helped the Mets sweep the Atlanta Braves in 3 games in the 1969 Playoffs.
Additionally, Art's bat is on display in Baseball's Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY for hitting 4 consecutive home runs in 4 at-bats in 1966.
The name "Shamsky" has become synonymous with the
hit tv show "Everyone Loves Raymond." Robert's dog
was named Shamsky and Art has appeared as a guest on the program.
Art has been invited to manage one of the six new teams for the new professional Israel Baseball League starting it's inaugural season June 2007 in Israel. Bud Selig sits on the advisory board of the league as well as a number of other high profile dignitaries who will be joining Art in introducing professional baseball to Israel. Art is available for speaking engagements, discussing his book, "The Magnificent Seasons", and travels throughout the United States providing excitement, nostalgia and baseball history to his fans. |
